Mountains, rainforest and a real creole touch

On the mountainous Basse Terre part of the island, you will find the Guadeloupe National Park with the 1,500 metre high volcano La Soufrière, architectural gems, rum distilleries, banana plantations, mango and pineapple fields. With the exception of the north, the beaches are smaller and partly black because they are of volcanic origin. The island capital of Basse-Terre probably has the most beautiful market in Guadeloupe and the fishing village of Deshaies is no longer an insider tip, but one of the 10 most beautiful villages in France.

Numerous gardens, such as the botanical garden in Deshaies or the Jardin de Valombreuse, as well as rum distilleries, plantations and sprawling rainforest are evidence of a flourishing tropical vegetation. The great advantage of Guadeloupe: there are no poisonous animals, such as the lance viper in Martinique. This paradise can be explored in a relaxed way. Great villas and private guest rooms create the feeling of an individual holiday in the countryside.

There is hardly any high life on Basse-Terre. However, you will find upscale restaurants, great sunsets and discreet nightlife options with Caribbean flair, such as in Ziotte or in Bourg, the center of the fishing village of Deshaies. The town of Basse Terre itself has a small old town that is well worth a detour. Diving is good on the west coast, while the north and east are popular with surfers at selected spots such as Plage Bananier. Deshaies is really well-known world-wide for the series of "Death in Paradise".
