On the road to Sainte Marie

DI Richard Poole arrives at St Marie Airport. On the way, the commissioner talks about the island... and the French. However, the airport reception building is .... in Deshaies, about 500 meters from the police station. From the Béthsy elementary school, the inspector's gaze wanders towards the sun and the cemetery opposite. The beauty of Deshaies will be shown later. The hilarious crime series Death in Paradise was produced as a British-French co-production in Guadeloupe. Unlike the soap Hotspots in episode 8.3, the series hit does not have to be discontinued after 12 seasons because the presenter was poisoned. The BBC has now also ordered the 15th season from Red Planet Pictures/Atlantic Productions.  In the TV, Guadeloupe is presented as a neighboring island that is 10 times larger and the actors are also repeatedly in Guadeloupe in the series, e.g. at the port of Pointe-à-Pitre. The capital of the island of Sante Marie is Honoré, in reality Deshaies in the north of Guadeloupe. The actors change, the success remains - more and more tourists are following in the footsteps of the actors.  More than 1000 contracts for the extras were already signed in 2011. Of course, the Guadeloupe region also subsidizes the production costs every year with around 500,000 euros and opens the doors. The return on investment is estimated at 160 to 800% by the region (source: Région Guadeloupe, Direction de la communication et des relations publiques, 2015) The screenwriter Robert Thorogood received the “En route to France” award shortly after the start. The series is being produced by the English company Red Planet Pictures Limited on commission with around 80 technicians. Skyprod Productions is still used on location. You can choose between our tours. Depending on the year or to the principal filming locations in Honoré (Deshaies) and Sainte-Marie (Sainte Rose and, for exemple, also Pointe Noire).

Filming takes around 3 - 6 months. In 2016, for example, there were 98 days of filming.  Filming sometimes takes place from 6 a.m. (with breaks) until 6 p.m. ..... because it always gets dark at 6 p.m. The weekends are free and the actors can pursue their interests. In Deshaies, the main road N2 runs as a one-way street in the direction of Basse-Terre along the restaurants and boutiques. The street had to be closed every time filming. Therefore, the restaurant was changed and the meetings of the police force are now in the restaurant La Madras in a small side street. The crew and some of the actors are accommodated in the Fort Royal complex. However, the stars usually stay in villas with their relatives, which are rented by the local agency Sky Prod Productions (e.g. Ralph Little in Maison Alissa?). Guest stars are accommodated in the central Résidence O Coeur des Deshaies with its fantastic panoramic view over the bay of Deshaies and in the evening where do they meet up? Not in a bar right by the sea? Some people quickly got too warm during filming and left the series. Or for personal reasons.  Others stuck it out for a long time and made lots of friends in the village, such as Danny John-Jules (Dwayne Myers), who also speaks the local language créole guadeloupéen. Or Joséphine Jobert, who already knew Guadeloupe from the French soap opera Villa Karayib, which was filmed for two years in a villa near Saint Francois. She is also a very good singer and had a real hit in 2007 with her songs in the youth series “Nos années pension”. “Pour la vie” - 15 weeks in the French charts. She keeps fit with boxing training - with one of the best fitness coaches in France: Anthony Fischer from Metz. Helicopter pilot, scuba diver, semi-professional footballer and medical student - Ralph Little is certainly one of the most colorful personalities in British film - he fell in love with Deshaies and Guadeloupe. But did you know that he played Will Teague in the 6th episode of season 2.... and at the end of season 13 sets off on the boat hand in hand with DS Florence Casell? Florence Casell comes back to Sainte-Marie because of him and also solves a case on the island of St Augustin (which is in reality on Grande Anse beach) in collaboration with Dwayne Myers. In the 14th season, DI Marvin Wilson (played by Don Gilet) is the first older model with local color. Many people wanted a woman as DI, but Red Planet decided otherwise. For the killer André Morgan from season 4, episode 1.

The filming and the actors

The series has been a huge success worldwide since 2011. It is broadcast in 135 countries (including the USA on the PBS channel) and is watched by around 100 million viewers. It is mainly filmed in the two streets of the beautiful fishing village of Deshaies and on la Perle beach, where the inspector's bungalow is located. Walk with us in the footsteps of Don Gilet, Ralph Little, Kris Marshall, Sarah Martins, Humphrey Goodman and Camille Bordey. Stroll and/or drive with us to the filming locations on the fictitious island of Sainte Marie (e.g. Domaine de Séverin sugar cane factory, Langley Hôtel Fort Royal).  Visit our restaurant “Chez Samy” (in the series Surf School Sandy Cove) on the beautiful beach of Grande Anse, main filming location of the second episode “Hidden Secrets” of the fourth season. Samy will tell you all about Ralph Little, Sarah Martins, Kris Marshall, Danny John-Jules, Joséphine Jobert etc. over a fruit cocktail and hot temperatures.  Our tours are on the trail of Death in Paradise and there is no connection between the production company (Red Planet Pictures Limited) and our services.

Honoré Police Station

The Honoré Police Station is located in the old rectory in the sleepy village of Deshaies, next to the St Pierre-et-Paul church. Ralph Little loved Deshaies and liked to rest in a cell during breaks - because it's not that warm here. When filming is not in progress, there is a small museum (admission € 15 p. p. 2025) to visit - the brainchild of Jeanny Marc. But do you know the history of the vicarage? The market in front of the church is only organized for the series. Just like the markets by the sea or the harbor. But where are the next colorful tropical weekly markets?  The small fish market in Baille Argent is definitely very charming. And do the bars really play Tiney Winey Soca Calipso like in the films or Zouk and Latino music?

Catherine's Bar

Catherine's Bar (closed on Wednesdays) is the meeting place after the cases are solved at the end of each episode. Some of the crew sometimes sit there after a long and hot day of filming. Over an Etensel beer, a favourite on Ste Marie, or perhaps Corsaire beer from Guadeloupe? Catherine becomes the mayor of Honoré shortly after the arrest of Joseph Richards in episode 6.8. Officer Myers had elegantly knocked out rival candidate Peter Baxter.  Jeanny Marc, a former member of the French National Assembly, is the mayor of Deshaies. Why has Deshaies retained this charm? There is a reason for this. It lies with a mayor. Jeanny Marc and Max Mathiasin...a number of well-known politicians in France currently come from this small townIncidentally, both are also cousins... Elisabeth Bourgine's son Jules Miesch plays Raphaël Coty in season 13, episode 8. However, you never see them together in the episode. That's not possible because Catherine Bordey wasn't in Deshaies at the time of Jules' stay.

Luxury hotels as filming locations

Créole Beach Hôtel Plage © Des hôtels et des îles
Créole Beach Hôtel Plage © Des hôtels et des îles

A special feature in the third season of the series. The name of the Créole Beach Hotel & Spa will not be changed in the 4th episode. DI Humphrey can investigate luxuriously without delay. In fact, the crew of Air France wanted to be accommodated at the Creole Beach Hotel. However, only years after the filming of this aircrew story. (Source: Syndicat des Navigants du Groupe Air France, Comite Hebergement 2019). It was the same with the Hotel Rayon Vert in episodes 6.5 and 7.2 and the posh Hotel Toubana & Spa, where Aunt Mary was placed in season 5. There was even advertising on the transfer bus at the airport of Sainte Marie.

Deshaies is increasingly becoming the St Tropez of the small Antilles: yachts, windjammers up to 600 people, about 10 cruise ships in the winter season 2023/2024 and fishing boats. Nevertheless, the place remains authentic. Traditional sailing at the yacht club Déhé Vwal. The High Light: the Traditour in July. The port of Deshaies does not receive ships proposing regular traffic, such as in episode 8.1 of the Honore Port the Iguana Beach, which in reality is traveling from St Francois to Terre-de-Haut and Marie-Galante. Iguana Beach is the liner of Death in Paradise. Also DS Camille Bordey said goodbye in episode 4.4 with this ferry or DS Florence Cassell returned in episode 10.1 with it and drove in season 13 with DI Neville Parker to the farewell together. The speed boat "Karambor" from Gwadaventure in Sainte Rose often brings the police team to the crime scenes under the name "Caribbean Princess," for example in episode 6.5 "Man over board."

Fantastic villas

© Villa Belle Cabresse
© Villa Belle Cabresse

The Creole Villa Belle Cabresse and the Hotel Habitation de Comté, located on the same beautiful tropical park, served as a golf course and golf club. In the second episode of season 11, Bradley Faircroft was slain by his brother Connor Faircroft. DI Neville Parker was initially a bit confused and the Comissioner worried about tourism, over a glass of rum, of course.

Bay of Deshaies

The bay of Deshaies is one of the central filming locations: at the harbour, on the boats, in Catherine's bar (Restaurant la Kaz, then le Madras) and on the streets of the town centre - since the first episode in 2011. The very family-orientated Sarah Martins broke her foot here at the harbour during a stunt while running along the jetty. She never allowed herself to be doubled - Cape Verdean pride? That's why Camille Bordey was absent when the inspector was caught with dengue fever. The script had to be rewrittenIf you watch episodes 7 and 8 of the first season, you'll see that Camille Bordey barely runs or doesn't run smoothly. As we know from episode 1 of season 5, Joséphine Jobert also masters such sprints on the harbour. And the triple jump over the boats - did you do that yourself? In episode 7.2, Florence Cassell arrives at the police station on crutches. Had Joséphine broken her foot or did Danny John-Jules want to play sergeant?

Botanical Garden

The botanical garden of Deshaies is one of the main sights of Guadeloupe. DI Richard Poole was murdered here in the first episode of season 3.  Formerly owned by the French comedian Coluche, it was the landscape gardener Michel Gaillard who gave the estate its present form. Michel Gaillard, who was very popular with his employees, had to fight for a long time to complete his project. What were the reasons? The mayor did not want large hotels, a cinema or oversized advertising posters, but rather gentle tourism. It fitted in with the tourism conceptBut what was bothering the local council in Deshaies? It wasn't Pico, the model pupil of the Royal St Helene Dog Police Academy, although he was taken out of circulation again after episode 7.4. The success of soft tourism has its price. Recently, parking fees have been charged at ticket machines in Deshaies. Day trippers can avoid these charges by parking in Sainte Rose or at Plage de Cluny and taking the public minibuses to Deshaies or to Plage de Grande Anse in Ziotte.

Pointe Noire (Port Royal)

 © Mairie de Pointe Noire

Often misunderstood, Pointe Noire used to be one of Guadeloupe's most important cities. The government building with the seat of the Comissioner is located at Place de la Liberté. In episode 9.1 a great New Year's Eve party was set up there and in the Christmas special of the 13th season the light is turned off the police chief there during a speech. In the rainforest of Pointe-Noire, many scenes were shot, including episode 4.7 or episode 8.2 in the zoo of Guadeloupe. Here, too, there are fascinating filming locations, such as the Habitation Samana Beausejour, a former coffee plantation in the hinterland (episodes 6.2 or 7.6). The city library of Pointe Noire is the seat of the Sainte Marie Times (episode 6.7)

Sainte Rose

Habitation du Comté © Eugenia, Habitation du Comté

Shortly after Sainte Rose, several episodes were filmed in the small village of Comté de Lohéac. In the center: the cute hotel Habitation de Comté. This is where Mr and Mrs Knight lived in the 4th episode of the first series. "Best friends." Camille Bordey sniffed in the house, Richard Poole picked the garden apart and in the end Camille already became jealous. In the second episode of the fifth season here was the seat of government of Governor Caroline Bamber. The Comissioner drank champagne for once and there were many suspects. Don Warrington, or as his real name is Don Williams, not only cuts a fine figure in speeches and festivities, but also in dancing, strictely coming dancing on BBC One 2008, at the tender age of 56.

Plage de Grande Anse (Sandy Bay)

One of the most beautiful beaches in Guadeloupe and a frequent filming location, e.g. episode 3 of season 5 "Posing in Murder" or episode 4 of season 7 "The Healer". Ralph Little (Detective Inspector Neville Parker) on the beach of Grande Anse near the restaurant "Chez Samy", which is rated very highly in the usual portals.

We have been following the series closely since the beginning. Many actors love this long, unspoilt beach in the morning. Some come to Ziotte for lunch and dinner, where bars and restaurants on the beach exude French-Caribbean flair. The sunsets are gigantic. Many artists also love our secluded restaurant ‘Chez Samy’ in the middle of the nature reserve, like an island - Belle Ile en mer..... Singers, writers, poets. Original, authentic and endearing. Great villas await you in Ziotte, such as the home of the presenter Melanie of the Sainte Marie Broadcasting Corporation in the rue Maya street.

We cannot publicly name celebrities out of respect for privacy. Not even the villas where the actors stay. Many guest stars extend their stay to go on holiday. However, the mayor of Honoré loves Paris, always likes to come to the shooting for a short time and then flies back again. Maybe this is the right mix to always remain to?

Îles des Pigeons (Rosalie Island)

In episode 8.6, the police team crosses by boat to Rosalie Island - off the coast of Bouillante - but from the port of Baille-Argent (in the series Belle-Mer, where Patrice Campbell runs a restaurant) between Deshaies and Pointe-Noire, where episode 8.5 was filmed. The title Mysterious Depths is perfectly chosen. Here is the underwater sanctuary Costeau - one of the best diving resorts in the Caribbean. However, no villa with garden. In episode 6.3, the hotel "Maison Cécile" is located there in a photo montage. Here Marta wanted to spend a romantic weekend with Humphrey. The colonial house on the island is actually located in the hamlet of Comté de Lohéac close to the Hotel Habitation du Comté.

Gosier

They liked to shoot in Gosier. At the Hotel Fleur d'Epée DI Parker had real work. He can't explain the murder of young bride Diane Smith at all in episode one of season seven. Each of the Marston siblings had a motive and in the end they were all arrested together. A chess tournament took place nearby in episode 8 of season 10. The police commissariat was relocated to the Arawak Beach Hotel, especially the lobby served as a filming location. The Comissioner learned on the occasion from his ex-wife Maggie Harper that he has a daughter.

Architectonical tresors

If you follow the series regularly, you will also get an overview of the architectural gems of the island. The Samana Beauséjour is one of the most beautiful colonial buildings of the 19th century. At an altitude of about 300 metres, you can walk in the footsteps of DI Jack Mooney in a tropical garden. Don't worry, there are no steep cliffs nearby. Staying there: an experience.

Unknown beach beauties

Souffleur beach © Office de Tourisme du Nord de Grande Terre

At a beach wedding, the father of DS Naomie Thomas's best friend was murdered. DI Neville Parker and his team move in support. He cannot enjoy the beauty of the beaches of Port Louis. We are surprised that the legend of Madame Coco has not yet been taken up. On the beaches of Port Louis and Anse Bertrand you will discover Guadeloupe far away from the tourist crowds.

DS Thomas and Saint Barnabas

The church of the island of Saint Barnabas, in reality the village of Port Louis in the northwest of the flat island part Grande Terre, home of DS Naomie Thomas. It was the first episode filmed entirely outside of Deshaies. Shantol Jackson is pretty fixed, maybe because she's shot with Usain Bolt before. She is from Jamaica. Too bad that the diving enthusiast Joséphine Jobert is no longer there. An insider tip here are perhaps the most beautiful dive spots of Guadeloupe. Popular: is the ride with the Flèch-Kann - the sugar cane arrow - at Beauport through the sugar cane fields.

Langley Resort Fort Royal (Bay Cove Hotel, Jaracanda Clinic)

The Langley Resort Fort Royal was and is a frequent filming location of the series under different names (such as Paradise Bay Hotel). Only the sun was witness..... you certainly do not fall from the floor of the "Bay Cove Hotel" like Lisa Watson (season 1, Épisode 2), but perhaps from all clouds, blinded by the charm of Deshaies? Our tours always include a stop at Fort Royal. Of course, you also have the opportunity to stay there, sit at the bar and, with a little luck, meet the crew there during the shooting. Do we also have an answer to the most difficult questions of passionate TV viewers, such as where is the villa on Sebastian Island (Kahouanne Island, visible from Fort Royal)? Because there it is neither flat nor inhabited. An open case from Season 3, Episode 7. Take a look at the Maison Maudois in Saint Claude above the island capital Base-Terre.

British-French cooperation

30 percent of the inhabitants of Sainte-Marie are French, which worries DI Poole already on his arrival. In Season 5, Episode 2: The Emerald Island, the British and French argue over Spinners Rock or la Roche de la République, where gemstone-containing rocks were discovered. Dwyne Myers and JP Hooper discovered drilling. The governor of Ste Marie, Caroline Bamber, addresses quite clear words to Francois Tromeur, the chairman of the government parliament of St Robert, the neighbouring French island of Ste Marie. Spinners Rock is the rock island Tête d'Anglais visible from the coastal road Sainte Rose - Deshaies. But what does the collaboration between Red Planet Pictures and Atlantic Productions really look like? She's very good. Most French people found it a bit difficult to shoot English at the beginning. But the language barrier was short-lived. The crew consists of about 50% British and French employees. An important intermediary role is played by the Bureau d'Acceuil de Tournages guadeloupéen BAT, whose task is to increase audiovisual production. Founded in 2008, this institution has a good connection to the region and serves as a door opener: contacts, logistics, actors, freedoms. Tony Cocoin-Viloin has been an absolute professional at the top since 2008. Several films were pulled ashore, with three episodes of the crime series "Meurtre" arriving on Guadeloupe, Saint Martin and Marie-Galante three more nationally acclaimed films in France.
