On the road on Sainte Marie

DI Richard Poole arrives at St Marie Airport. On the journey, the commissioner talks about the island... and the French. However, the airport  building is .... in Deshaies, about 500 metres from the police station. From the Béthsy primary school, the inspector's view rises towards the sun and afterwards he looked ... to the cemetery opposite. The beauty of Deshaies will be shown later. The well-known crime series Death in Paradise was filmed as a British-French co-production on Guadeloupe. In the series, Guadeloupe is presented as a neighboring island 10 times larger and again and again the actors are also in the series on Guadeloupe, for example, at the port of Pointe-à-Pitre. The capital of the island Sante Marie is Honoré, in reality Deshaies in the north of Guadeloupe. The actors change, the success remains - more and more tourists walk in the footsteps of the actors.  More than 400 local employes are involved in the filming. The region of Guadeloupe, of course, subsidizes the production costs every year and opens the doors. Screenwriter Robert Thorogood received the "En route to France" award shortly after the series began. The series is produced by the English company Red Planet Pictures Limited under contract with about 70 technicians. On location Skyprod Productions is still used. You can choose in our tours. Depending on the year or to the principle filming locations in Honoré and Sainte-Marie (Deshaies and Sainte Rose).

The shooting will last about 3 to 6 months. In Deshaies, the main road N2 runs as a one-way street towards Basse-Terre along the restaurants and boutiques. It was necessary to close the street each time filming took place. That's why the restaurant was changed and the meetings of the police crew took place in the restaurant La Madras in a small side street. The crew and some actors stayed in the Fort Royal complex. The stars, however, usually stay in villas with their relatives. Guest stars are accommodated in the central Résidence O Coeur des Deshaies with its great panoramic view over the bay of Deshaies and in the evening they meet where? Not in a bar directly at the sea? Some actors  quickly became too warm during filming and left the series. Or due to private reasons.  Others held out for a long time and made lots of friends in the town, like Danny John-Jules (Dwayne Myers), who also speaks the local language créole guadeloupéen.

The series has been a great success worldwide since 2011. Filming takes place mainly in the two streets of the beautiful fishing village of Deshaies and on the beach la Perle, where the bungalow of the inspector is located. Walk with us in the footsteps of Ralph Little, Kris Marshall, Sarah Martins or Humphrey Goodmam and Camille Bordey. Stroll and/or drive with us to the filming locations on the fictional island of Sainte Marie (e.g. sugar cane factory Domaine de Séverin, Langley Hôtel Fort Royal).  Visit our restaurant "Chez Sammy" on the gorgeous beach of Grande Anse, main filming location of the second episode "A Beautiful Day to Die" of the fourth season. Sammy will tell you interesting facts about Ralph Little, Sarah Martins, Kris Marshall, Danny John-Jules, Joséphine Jobert etc. while enjoying a fruit cocktail and hot temperatures. Our tours are in the footsteps of Death in Paradise and there is no connection between the production company (Red Planet Pictures Limited) and our services.

The Honoré Police Station

The Honoré Police Station is located in the old rectory in the dreamy village of Deshaies, next to the St Pierre-et-Paul church. When not filming, there is a small museum to visit. But do you know the history of the rectory? The market in front of the church is held just for the series. Just like the markets at the sea or harbor. However, where are the next colorful tropical weekly markets?

Catherine's bar is the meeting place after the resolution of the cases at the end of each episode. She is the mayor of Honoré. Jeanny Marc, former member of the French National Assembly, is the mayor of Deshaies. Why did Deshaies get this charm? There is a reason. It lies with a mayor. Jeanny Marc and Max Mathiasin...from this small town currently come some politicians known in France.

By the way, both of them are also cousins..

A special feature in the 3rd season of the series. The name of the Créole Beach Hotel & Spa is not changed. DI Humphrey can investigate luxuriously without delay.

Bay of Deshaies

In the bay of Deshaies was filmed at the port, on the boats, in the bar of Catherine (restaurant la Kaz, then le Madras) and on the streets of the village since the first episode in 2011. Sarah Martins broke her foot here at the harbor during a stunt while running along the jetty. She basically did not let herself be doubled.

Deshaies Botanical Garden is one of the main high lights of Guadeloupe. DI Richard Poole was murdered here in the first episode of season 3.  Former property of the French comedian Coluche, it was the landscape gardener Michel Gaillard who gave the property its present form. Very popular with his employees, Michel Gaillard had to struggle for a long time to complete his project. What were the reasons? The mayor did not want big hotels, no cinema, no oversized advertising, slow motion tourism. It fit into the tourism concept. But what bothered the local council in Deshaies?

Beach of Grande Anse

One of the most beautiful beaches of Guadeloupe and a frequent filming location. Ralph Little (Detective Inspector Neville Parker) on the beach of Grande Anse at the height of the restaurant "Chez Samy", which is very well rated in the important web sites.

We followed the series closely since the beginning. Many actors love this pristine long beach in the morning. Some come to Ziotte for lunch and dinner, where bars and restaurants on the beach exude French-Caribbean flair. The sunsets are gigantic. Many artists also love our secluded restaurant "Chez Sammy" in the middle of the nature reserve, like an island - Belle Ile en mer..... Singers, writers, poets. Original, authentic and lovable

Langley Resort Fort Royal

The Langley Resort Fort Royal was and is a frequent filming location of the series. Only the sun witnessed.....you certainly don't fall off the floor of the "Bay Cove Hotel" like Lisa Watson (Season 1, Épisode 2), but perhaps out of all clouds, dazzled by the charm of Deshaies? Our tours always include a stop at Fort Royal. Of course, you also have the possibility to stay there overnight, sit at the bar and, with a little luck, meet the crew there during the filming. .
