The island of Sainte-Marie is described in detail in season 3, episode 3 "An artistic murder". On the basis of a three-part old travel guide.
"Walks of the Carribean" by Albert Dunn we learn details about the island, e.g. that a lighthouse is to be built, that the island has 1/10 of the km² of Guadeloupe or a comparison with other islands. "The rainforests are humming with life". DI Goodmann was bored, even if the guidebook exposed the gallery owner of the art gallery. But where is Sainte-Marie? Mainly in the northwest of Guadeloupe. The canton (district) Sainte-Rose 1 with its 4 districts, the northwestern part of Sainte-Rose, the northern part of Bouillante, Pointe Noire and Deshaies has about 140 km² and is thus somewhat smaller than the island Sainte-Marie with 162 km². However, the population of about 15,000 is higher than that of Sainte-Marie, about 10,000. Overall, it is fairly congruent and filming was mainly done in these 4 municipalities. There is a local police, "police municipale" and also a gendarmerie everywhere. Crime is written small and most offences are speeding, some of them significant. It is not a British overseas territory, but belongs to the island of Guadeloupe. There are sugar cane plantations, tourism and fishing, like on Sante-Marie. Many luxurious villas, sometimes for rent to tourists, smaller charming hotels, but no beauty clinic, like the Jaracanda Clinic. The Palace of Justice is not in Deshaies, but the "Hôtel de Ville" in Sainte-Rose. The government building is the town hall of Pointe Noire. There is also no governor (e.g. Caroline Bamber) or ministers (like Jacob Doran, Minister of Commerce), but only mayors, land commissioners and a prefect. The Sainte-Marie Bank deals in dollars, the Sainte-Marie pound and the Eastern Caribbean dollar. It is located on the Place de la Liberté near the Pointe Noire town hall. Dwayne and Florence obtain information about Marcus Knight's wallet there in episode 5 "Lost Identity" of season 5. The means of payment are Euros. In the second episode of season 5 "One for the road" we are introduced to the governor's house - the *** Hotel Habitation du Comté in the village of Comté de Loheac. This is where the party for the farewell of Governor Bamber takes place. In the 11th season, it serves as a golf club.
It is probably the most beautiful part of Guadeloupe. The islands off Sainte Rose, the wide sandy beaches from Plage de Cluny to Grande Anse (Attention: some currents, e.g. Cluny), the picturesque Deshaies, the botanical garden, rum distilleries.....You are looking for the inspector's flat on la Perle beach? It will be completely packed into containers and rebuilt 2 weeks before filming begins. Due to the winter storms, the pavilion may otherwise be washed away if the sea comes out of its bed a few metres. The police jeep, a Landrover Defender 110, was modernised after season 3 and converted from the 300 Tdi to the TD5 version. The sidecar, a Royal Enfield Bullet 500, is available to the Ste Marie Police as another vehicle. The second administrative district on the island is Port Royal, like Honoré a port town. Sainte Marie was French for a long time and is located roughly next to Dominica. This is due to its proximity to Martinique. 30 per cent of the population speak French, there is right-hand traffic and vehicles bear the number plates of Guadeloupe 971.
The church Sainte Rose de Lima was, among other things, the filming location for episode 8 of the fourth season. Pastor Mason talked there about his wife. She had made friends with the warden of the prison - but he didn't know that. The 18th century church is one of the hidden gems of Guadeloupe. It is located in Sainte Rose near the town hall. The mangroves and islands off the coast of Sainte Rose invite you to surf and relax.
You often see images like this in the series. Many scenes were shot in the mountains above Pointe-Noire. The volcano Mount Esmée erupted for the last time 80 years ago. La Soufrière is the volcano of Guadeloupe. Episode 1 of season 6 was shot at the volcano observatory there. However, the volcano behind it is a fiction. In this episode, a lot of technical tricks are used. It was supposed to be filmed on the island of Montserrat. But then the organisers changed their plans. They didn't want to ship the expensive film equipment by boat. Understandable, given the heavy seas between the two neighbouring islands. Especially as the equipment had already been exposed to a storm once in the Atlantic.
