Cycling in the Lesser Antilles

Travelling longer distances by bike in tropical temperatures and high humidity does not seem sensible at first glance. In addition, the local cycling style on some islands significantly increases the risk of a heart attack. Cycle paths are not yet very widespread. The topography often causes additional difficulties with steep climbs that raise your heart rate into the four-digit range. Nevertheless, there are beautiful routes that you can explore at your leisure and on a good bike.

Anguilla by bike

The largely flat or slightly hilly Anguilla with its little-used roads and beautiful beaches offers many opportunities for a relaxed tour. In addition, the driving style is rather slow, as there are hardly any major roads. Cycling is a popular sport on Anguilla and there is a widespread cycling culture. MTB and racing bikes can therefore be hired in many hotels. The approximately 30 km long and maximum 10 km wide island allows for a cool mix of relaxed and active holidays without having to chase the maximum kilometres. Swimming stops, breaks at beach cafés and sightseeing amidst the tropical vegetation make for a pleasant day out. We will be happy to suggest a programme for you. Off-road by MTB, e.g. in the sparsely populated east of the island near East End or on the road by road bike. If cycling is too strenuous for you, try another mode of transport.

Guadeloupe

In Guadeloupe, the "Tour de Guadeloupe" cycling race is known nationwide and attracts many spectators every year. Unfortunately, there are hardly any attractive side roads and cycle paths on the island of "Basse Terre". The climbs are often steep and sometimes long and many car drivers like to accelerate....  Cycling on side roads is possible in the Sainte Rose/Capesterre area. This looks much better on the slightly hilly and partly flat island of Grande Terre. Very nice possibilities, e.g. in the "Grands Fonds" or near Saint Francois at the Pointe des Châteaux. A relaxed cycling programme for a week should also include at least one detour to the island of Marie Galante. There are excellent cycling opportunities on many small roads with little traffic.

St Kitts and Nevis

Due to the local driving style in road traffic, especially the lorries transporting ferry goods, as well as the topography of the island (steep climbs), there are hardly any opportunities to hire bikes on St Kitts. On the smaller, cosy island of Nevis, there are beautiful tours through tropical vegetation, sleepy villages, along beautiful beaches - for every taste and every level, especially on the Windwardside, e.g. on Pinneys Beach or near Charlestown. Cycling on Nevis is very beautiful, but there is not yet a real cycling culture. In January 2022, an innovation will be introduced on the island of Nevis: Pedestrians and cyclists will have right of way over turning cars........ "New Road Code"..... Most tours are partly off-road. It is therefore advisable to hire a mountain bike. This should be booked before arrival.

Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua is easy to explore by bike on side roads and paths. Road traffic on the island, which is a maximum of approx. 20 kilometres wide, is manageable and so are the speeds slowly. Charming villages, the view of the sea and the marvellous beaches, the varied landscape with the one or other not too steep incline promise beautiful cycling tours. Discover Shirley Heights, Indian Creek, Five Island Peninsula or Half Moon Bay by bike.

Marie-Galante - "Grande Galette"

A peaceful and quiet place for active guests who want to explore the approx. 160 km² and max. 15 km long sugar cane island by bike. The differences in altitude are small and the distances are not great. The "Tour Cycliste de Marie-Galante" cycle race is always a great spectacle in July. How can you cycle around 600 kilometres on this small island in 5 days? Try it out. Bikes should be hired before travelling. There are beautiful beaches, cosy villages and hamlets as well as some tourist attractions. The pace of life in the bars and restaurants is relaxed and after 1 or 2 weeks you will return to Europe or eg North America "new" and refreshed. We are always happy to provide detailed programme suggestions.
